Curious about the best beaches in Lagos, Portugal?
Are you looking for the best and most stunning beaches in and around Lagos during your trip through the Algarve in Portugal? Then you’re here at the right place!
I spend many months in Lagos each year, so I have explored many of these stunning beaches that grace the shores of the beautiful coastal town of Lagos, a must-see place in the Algarve. And I want to tell you all about it.
In this article, I’ve listed the 17 best and most beautiful beaches in Lagos, Portugal, to help you out. And, there is even a hidden secret beach! So let’s get started right away!
Best Beaches In Lagos
1) Praia do Camilo
The beach is approximately 100 meters long, varying in width depending on the tides. The beach is nestled between towering cliffs, creating a sense of privacy and seclusion, and is protected from harsh winds and big waves. This can be very hot in summer, but a dip in the water will keep you cool.
The only way to access the beach (besides from the water) is by descending the 200-step staircase. When you reach ocean level, you’ll see a tunnel that leads to the second secluded beach of Praia do Camilo. You can walk over the rocks to the other beach at low tide but use the tunnel at high tide.
Why This Is One Of The Best Beaches In Lagos Portugal
Known for its stunning rock formations, crystal-clear waters, and golden sands, Praia do Camilo is one of the most iconic beaches in Lagos. And perhaps even the most iconic beach in Portugal. It is a paradise for nature lovers and photographers as this beach is very photogenic.
Due to its secluded nature, Praia do Camilo does not have extensive facilities. You can find a restaurant at the top of the stairs next to the small parking lot. There are no facilities at ocean level, so bringing your own beach essentials, such as towels, sunscreen, water, and snacks, is best. Also, when you want to snorkel (which is a great thing to do at this beach), you have to bring your own gear, as there are no rental facilities available on the beach. However, you can book kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding, or a boat tour to visit this beach from the water, which is one of the best things to do in Lagos.
Taking a refreshing dive in the water, sunbathing, taking photos, and exploring the grottos are among the most favorite things to do on this beach. And a visit to this beach can be easily combined with visiting neighboring beaches such as Praia do Ana beach and watching the sunset from Ponta da Piedade.
Where Is Praia do Camilo?
It is located on the east side of the headland of Lagos and nestled between Praia do Ana beach and Ponta da Piedade. It is a 10-minute drive from the city center of Lagos or a 30-40 minute scenic walk along the coastline.
Praia do Camilo Location On Map
There is a designated parking area at the top of the stairs of Praia do Camilo, although spaces can be limited during peak season. It is advisable to arrive early or consider alternative transportation options such as walking or taxiing from Lagos when you’re visiting during peak season.
Best Time To Visit Praia do Camilo
The best time to visit Praia do Camilo is in the morning, early afternoon, and when it’s low tide, so plenty of beach sand is available. At high tide, the ocean eats away a lot of the beach, so there isn’t much room left to lay down your beach towel. You can check the tide times here.
Also, the sun comes up on this side of the headland, so Praia do Camilo is a perfect spot to watch the sunrise. This also means that the sun will disappear behind the cliffs somewhere in the afternoon (depending on the time of the year), and you can’t see the sunset from this beach.
It’s also advisable to visit early in the morning to secure a good spot on the beach and enjoy the tranquility before the crowds arrive when traveling through the Algarve during the peak months in summer.

2) Praia da Dona Ana
The story behind the name of the beach is interesting. Dona Ana is the name of a nun who escaped an attack during World War I by fleeing through the tunnel between the convent and the beach. The beach was named after her years later.

Also, In 2015 the beach went into major construction to double the size of the sand so there was more room for people to sunbathe and protect visitors from the crumbling cliffs, which is a real thing on many beaches in Lagos. Some locals are fans of the newly developed beach, and some prefer the beach like it was before.

There are almost no currents or big waves, which makes it a perfect and calm place for snorkeling and swimming in the clear waters. And when you want to stay a bit longer and really enjoy this beach, there are great hotels with rooftop terraces offering amazing views surrounding the area of Praia da Dona Ana.
Best Time To Visit Praia Dona Ana
The best time to visit Praia Dona Ana is in the early morning if you want to enjoy the sun and arrive at the beach when it is less crowded. The name “Meia Praia” in Portuguese translates to “Half Beach” in English. The name is derived from the beach’s unique shape and geographical features. Meia Praia is a long and wide beach that stretches for about 4 kilometers, but its width is significantly narrower than its length. This characteristic led to the name “Half Beach” or “Meia Praia.”

It’s a great spot for relaxation and enjoying the breathtaking natural surroundings when you want a break from exploring the old town of Lagos because it is a walkable distance from the city center.
Why This Is One Of The Best Beaches In Lagos Portugal
Praia do Pinhão is relatively small in size, with a stretch of sand that spans approximately 100 meters in length. Its intimate size adds to its charm and creates a cozy atmosphere. And it tends to be less crowded than larger and more popular beaches in Lagos. Also, the rock formations protect the beach from strong winds. This can make it a bit hot in the summer, but you always take a refreshing dive because this beach is great for swimming. And activities like diving, snorkeling, and even cliff jumping (at high tide!)
Also, the beach is divided into two sections. The first section is small and at the bottom of the staircase and completely disappears when it’s high tide. The second part is larger and on the other side of the rock formation. You can walk to this part of the beach through a tunnel at low tide. How cool is that?!

Praia do Pinhão is located between the other beautiful beaches, Praia da Dona Ana and Praia dos Estudantes, on the east side of the headland of Lagos (see map). Why This Is One Of The Best Beaches In Lagos Portugal
This beach is also known as “Potato Beach” because of a shipwreck a long time ago filled with potatoes. It’s a real urban beach that everyone likes to go to. Many families like to visit this beach, and people come here after work to relax and have a drink and parties like to use this beach for an afterparty. 6) Praia dos Estudantes
Praia dos Estudantes, also known as “Students’ Beach,” is a typical everyone’s beach, but mostly you can expect families with children here relaxing on the beach—and photograph enthusiasts who want to get a glimpse of the Roman-style bridge.
Why This Is One Of The Best Beaches In Lagos Portugal
Praia dos Estudantes is a hidden gem tucked away in a small cove and known for its Roman-style bridge, which is very photogenic. It’s a small and unique beach located right next to Praia da Batata, therefore also close to Lagos city center, making it a convenient beach for a couple of hours escaping the heat from the city. Even though it is less crowded than Praia da Batata, due to its small size, it can feel crowded very quickly.
The beach is separated into two beaches. It has a northern part, where you arrive on the beach, and a southern part accessible via the tunnel. This is the part where you can see the Roman-style bridge, which makes this beach stand out from many other Lagos beaches. This bridge used to be part of the fortress of Pinhão, but that fortress isn’t there anymore. At high tide, you can kayak (which you can rent at Praia Batata) underneath the bridge.
I’m sorry to disappoint you if you expect a soft sandy beach, but the sand is quite hard. But since this beach is also located on the east side of the headland, it is mostly protected from harsh winds and big waves. Therefore, this beach is excellent for swimming, snorkeling, or stand-up paddle boarding.

Also, these rocks provide protection from the wind and offer delightful shaded spots on the beach. It is a peaceful beach that naturists frequently visit. Not the old naturist, but a younger crowd due to the adventurous location of the beach.
