Hawaii Packing List: What Our Family Packs for the Islands 🌺

Aloha! Few places feel as magical as stepping off the plane into that warm, flower-scented Hawaiian air. But Hawaii is not just one big beach. In a single trip you can snorkel with sea turtles in the morning, hike through a rainforest in the afternoon and shiver at a volcano summit before sunrise. That is exactly why a good Hawaii packing list matters so much.

The first time we went as a family, we packed like it was a simple beach vacation. We had five swimsuits each and not one warm layer, and we regretted it at 10,000 feet on Haleakala. Since then we have refined our list trip after trip, and it now covers everything from reef-safe sunscreen to the one jacket you will be so glad you brought.

Below you will find our complete Hawaii travel packing list by category, plus a list for women, tips for families with kids, what to pack by island and season, and the things you can safely leave at home. 🌺

Top 3 Hawaii Packing List Picks

If you only buy three things before your Hawaii trip, make it these. Each one solves a very Hawaiian problem.

  • Reef-safe sunscreen: Hawaii bans sunscreens with oxybenzone and octinoxate to protect its coral reefs, and the sun here is stronger than you think.
  • Snorkel set: rentals add up fast for a family, and having your own means you can jump in whenever you spot a turtle.
  • Waterproof dry bag: keeps phones, keys and towels dry on boat tours, kayak trips and those sudden tropical showers.

Hawaii Packing List: The Complete Checklist

Here is our full Hawaii packing list, organized by category. It is based on a 7 to 10 day trip. Hawaii is wonderfully casual, so you need fewer “nice” outfits than you might expect and more practical gear.

👙 Swimwear and Beach Clothes

You will spend a lot of time in the water, so this is where to invest your packing space. Swimsuits dry slowly in the humid air, so always bring at least two.

👗 Everyday Clothes

Think light, breathable and quick drying. Linen and cotton are your friends. Locals dress very relaxed, and even nice restaurants rarely ask for more than a sundress or an aloha shirt.

🧥 Layers for Volcanoes and Rain

This is the category most visitors forget. The summit of Haleakala on Maui and Mauna Kea on the Big Island can drop close to freezing, especially at sunrise. Rain showers pass through every day on the windward sides of the islands.

🩴 Shoes

Hawaii is mostly a flip-flop state (“slippers,” as locals call them), but lava rock and muddy trails need more than that.

☀️ Sun Protection

The Hawaiian sun is close to the equator and very strong, even on cloudy days. Pack more protection than you think you need, because sunscreen on the islands can cost twice as much.

🤿 Beach and Snorkel Gear

🧴 Toiletries and Health

📱 Tech and Documents

  • Phone, charger and a power bank for long beach days
  • A camera or GoPro for underwater photos
  • ID, flight details and car rental confirmation
  • Credit cards (US travelers do not need a passport or adapter for Hawaii)

🧳 Packing Organization

  • 3 to 4 packing cubes so each family member has their own color
  • A foldable bag for souvenirs and dirty laundry

If you are island hopping, packing cubes are a lifesaver. Inter-island flights are short, but you will pack and unpack several times. We keep one cube per person with a full beach day kit (swimsuit, rash guard, cover-up) so we can hit the sand on arrival day without opening the whole suitcase. Also keep in mind that inter-island airlines charge for checked bags, so lighter really is better.

Hawaii Packing List for Women

After several trips to the islands, these are the things that made the biggest difference for us as women:

  • Two swimsuits you love, not five you tolerate. Mix and match tops and bottoms for variety.
  • One dress that works everywhere. A flowy maxi dress goes from beach to dinner to luau with a quick change of sandals.
  • Easy hair. Humidity and saltwater win every time, so lean into braids and beach waves. Our beachy hairstyles are perfect here.
  • Minimal makeup. A tinted moisturizer with SPF, waterproof mascara and a lip tint are plenty.
  • A light cardigan or kimono for breezy evenings on the lanai.
  • A crossbody bag that is easy to carry on hikes and in town.

Hawaii Travel Packing List with Kids

Hawaii is one of the best family destinations in the US. The beaches are calm in many spots, the food is kid-friendly and there are turtles, waterfalls and volcanoes to keep everyone excited. A few extras make it easier:

  • Rash guards for the kids so you reapply less sunscreen
  • Kids’ snorkel masks that fit small faces properly
  • Swim diapers and wipes for little ones
  • Sand toys (or buy cheap ones at an ABC Store on arrival)
  • A lightweight stroller for walks along the beachfront
  • Snacks and refillable water bottles for long drives
  • Downloaded movies for the long flight from the mainland

What to Pack by Island

Each island has its own personality, and that changes your packing list a little.

Oahu

Busiest island with Waikiki, Pearl Harbor and the North Shore. Pack a slightly nicer outfit for dinners in Honolulu and closed-toe shoes for the Pearl Harbor visit, where bags are not allowed (bring a clear bag or just your phone and wallet).

Maui

Famous for the Road to Hana and sunrise at Haleakala. Pack warm layers, a beanie, motion sickness help for the winding road and plenty of snacks.

Big Island

The most varied island, from black sand beaches to snowy Mauna Kea. Bring sturdy hiking shoes for lava fields at Volcanoes National Park, a rain jacket for Hilo and warm layers for stargazing.

Kauai

The Garden Isle is green because it rains a lot. A rain jacket, quick-dry clothes and trail shoes that can get muddy are must-haves.

Packing List Hawaii by Season

Hawaii is warm all year, with daytime temperatures in the 80s. Still, there are small differences:

  • Summer (May to October): drier and hotter. Focus on sun protection and light clothes.
  • Winter (November to April): a little cooler and wetter, with bigger waves on north shores. Add one extra warm layer and an umbrella or rain jacket. This is also whale watching season, so binoculars are worth bringing.

What to Pack for Popular Hawaii Activities

Most Hawaii days revolve around one big activity. Here is what we throw in the daypack for each one, so nobody has to run back to the car.

Snorkel Tour or Boat Trip

Swimsuit worn under your clothes, rash guard, towel, reef-safe sunscreen applied 20 minutes before you get in the water, a dry bag, motion sickness bands, a hat that will not blow away and a light layer for the ride back. Most tours provide snorkel gear, but your own mask always fits better.

Rainforest or Waterfall Hike

Trail shoes that can get muddy, bug spray, a rain jacket, at least one liter of water per person, snacks and a small towel if you plan to swim under the falls. Leave nice sneakers at the hotel, because red Hawaiian dirt stains everything.

Volcano Sunrise or Stargazing

Long pants, warm fleece, beanie, a blanket from your rental, a thermos of coffee or hot chocolate and a headlamp or phone flashlight. Sunrise at Haleakala needs a reservation, so book it before you even start packing.

Luau Night

A flowy dress or aloha shirt, flat sandals for grass, a light cardigan and bug spray. Many luaus give you a shell or flower lei on arrival, so keep jewelry simple.

What Not to Pack for Hawaii

  • Regular chemical sunscreen. Sunscreens with oxybenzone and octinoxate are banned in Hawaii.
  • Formal clothes. Even fancy restaurants are resort casual.
  • Heels. Grass luaus and sandy paths are not made for them.
  • A huge beach umbrella. Most hotels and rentals provide one or you can rent one cheaply.
  • Too many shoes. Three pairs is plenty.

Our Best Hawaii Packing Tips

  1. Check for a washer. Many vacation rentals have one, which means you can pack half the clothes.
  2. Pack a swimsuit in your carry-on. If your bag is delayed, you can still hit the beach.
  3. Buy snacks and drinks at Costco or a local grocery store instead of the hotel shop.
  4. Do not take lava rocks or sand home. It is against the rules and locals believe it brings bad luck.
  5. Keep a towel and change of clothes in the car. You will always find another beach you want to jump into.

Hawaii Packing List FAQ

What should I pack for a week in Hawaii?

Pack 2 to 3 swimsuits, a rash guard, 5 to 6 light tops, 2 to 3 shorts, 2 dresses or nice shirts, a rain jacket, a warm fleece for volcano summits, sandals, water shoes, hiking shoes, reef-safe sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, a snorkel set and a dry bag.

Do I need a jacket in Hawaii?

Yes, at least a light one. A rain jacket is useful on every island, and if you plan to visit Haleakala or Mauna Kea, bring a warm fleece and beanie because temperatures can drop near freezing at the summit.

What kind of sunscreen is allowed in Hawaii?

Hawaii bans the sale of sunscreens containing oxybenzone and octinoxate, and Maui and the Big Island have stricter rules. Choose a mineral sunscreen with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide labeled reef-safe.

What should you not wear in Hawaii?

Skip heels, formal wear and heavy fabrics like thick denim. Hawaii is relaxed, so resort casual outfits, sandals and light, breathable clothes fit in everywhere.
