There is a special kind of freedom in walking straight past the baggage carousel. No waiting, no lost suitcase, no dragging a giant bag up the stairs of a tiny hotel. This carry on packing list is how we learned to travel light as a family, and once we tried it, we never really went back to checked bags for short trips.
We used to be the family with four suitcases and a car seat. Then one delayed bag and two days of borrowed pajamas later, we decided to figure out how to fit everything into a carry-on. It took a few trips (and a few mistakes) to get it right, but now we can do a full week with one cabin bag and one small backpack each.
This guide covers exactly what we pack: clothes, shoes, toiletries that pass TSA, tech, travel documents and the little comfort items that make a long flight easier. We also share how to adjust the list for women, for kids, for different trip lengths and seasons, plus the things you should leave at home. ✈️
Top 3 Carry On Packing List Picks
If you only buy three things before your next trip, make it these. They are the reason a carry-on suddenly feels twice as big.
- Packing cubes: they keep every outfit together, squeeze out extra air and make security checks and hotel unpacking take seconds.
- TSA-friendly toiletry bottle set: leak-proof silicone bottles under 3.4 oz, so your favorite shampoo and lotion come along without a fight at security.
- Lightweight daypack: your personal item on the plane and your day bag at the destination, all in one.
Carry On Packing List: The Complete Checklist
Here is our complete carry on packing list, broken down by category. It is based on a 5 to 7 day trip in mild weather. Further down we show you how to scale it up or down for shorter trips, longer trips and colder seasons.
The secret is simple: every item has to earn its spot. If it only works with one outfit, it stays home.
🧳 The Bags
Your bags decide everything else. Most US airlines allow a carry-on of around 22 x 14 x 9 inches plus one personal item that fits under the seat. Always check your airline before you fly, because budget carriers can be much stricter.
- 1 soft-sided carry-on or a lightweight spinner carry-on that fits your airline’s size limits
- 1 lightweight daypack or weekender bag as your personal item
- 3 to 4 packing cubes (one for tops, one for bottoms, one for underwear and socks)
- 1 set of compression packing cubes if you are tight on space
- 1 foldable tote for souvenirs and beach days
- 1 shoe bag so dirty soles never touch clean clothes
- 1 laundry bag for worn clothes
👕 Clothes
This is where most people overpack. Choose one color palette (we like navy, white, beige and one fun accent color) so every top works with every bottom. That way 8 or 9 pieces give you a different outfit every day.
- 4 to 5 tops (a mix of tees and one nicer shirt or blouse)
- 2 bottoms (jeans or chinos plus one pair of shorts or a skirt)
- 1 versatile dress or button-up shirt for dinners out
- 1 warm layer, like a light sweater or lightweight fleece jacket
- 1 packable rain jacket that folds into its own pocket
- 1 pair of leggings or joggers for the plane and lazy evenings
- 5 to 7 pairs of quick-dry travel underwear
- 4 to 5 pairs of merino wool socks (they can be worn twice and do not smell)
- 1 set of sleepwear
- 1 swimsuit (it weighs almost nothing and you never know when there is a pool)
Need outfit ideas for the travel day itself? Our guide to comfortable airport outfits shows exactly what we wear on the plane.
👟 Shoes
Shoes are the heaviest, bulkiest things in any bag, so limit yourself to three pairs maximum and wear the biggest pair on the plane.
- 1 pair of comfortable walking sneakers (wear these on the plane)
- 1 pair of lightweight sandals or flip-flops
- 1 pair of flat dressier shoes, like loafers for women or slim slip-on sneakers
Stuff socks and chargers inside your shoes to use every inch of space.
🧴 Toiletries (TSA-Friendly)
In the US, TSA allows liquids in containers of 3.4 oz (100 ml) or less, all fitting in one clear quart-size bag per passenger. That sounds limiting, but it is more than enough once you know a few tricks.
- 1 toiletry bag with a hanging hook
- 1 toiletry bottle set for shampoo, conditioner and body wash
- 1 clear, leak-proof pouch for your liquids at security
- Solid toiletries like shampoo bars, which do not count as liquids at all
- Toothbrush, travel toothpaste and floss
- Mini deodorant
- Travel-size dry shampoo
- Sunscreen in a travel size
- A micro hairbrush and a few hair ties
- Basic makeup and skincare in mini sizes
- Razor (cartridge razors are allowed in carry-ons)

🔌 Tech and Chargers
Tech gear tangles fast, so give it its own pouch. Power banks and spare lithium batteries must always go in your carry-on, never in checked luggage.
- Phone and charger
- 1 lightweight power bank
- 1 universal travel adapter for international trips
- 1 travel cable organizer bag
- Noise-canceling headphones or wireless earbuds
- 1 Kindle Paperwhite instead of heavy paperback books
- 1 AirTag tucked inside your bag, just in case you are forced to gate check it
🛂 Travel Documents and Money
Keep these in one place, in your personal item, so you never have to dig through the overhead bin.
- Passport or ID
- Boarding passes (on your phone plus a screenshot)
- A passport holder or RFID-blocking travel wallet
- Credit card plus a backup card stored separately
- A little local cash
- Travel insurance details and hotel confirmations
- Copies of important documents saved in your email or cloud
😴 In-Flight Comfort
These go in your personal item so they are within reach during the flight.
- A memory foam neck pillow you can clip to the outside of your bag
- Travel pillow and eye mask for overnight flights
- A light scarf that doubles as a blanket on cold planes
- An empty reusable water bottle to fill after security
- Snacks for travel days
- Lip balm and hand cream
- A pen for customs forms
🩹 Health and Extras
- A mini first aid kit with pain relievers, band-aids and motion sickness tablets
- Any prescription medicine in its original packaging
- A stain remover pen
- A compact travel umbrella
- A small microfiber towel for beach days and hostels
- Hand sanitizer and a few wipes
Carry On Packing List for Women
The biggest challenge for women traveling carry-on only is usually outfits for different occasions plus shoes and beauty products. Here is what works for us:
- Pick dresses that do double duty. A simple jersey or linen dress works for sightseeing with sneakers and for dinner with sandals and a necklace.
- Choose one bag. A small crossbody bag works day and night, and you can pack it flat in your carry-on.
- Downsize your beauty routine. A tinted moisturizer with SPF, mascara and one lip color covers almost everything.
- Skip the hair tools. Most hotels have a hair dryer. If you need curls, try heatless styles from our easy vacation hairstyles.
- Pack jewelry smart. Use a small pill organizer or a soft pouch so necklaces do not tangle.
Vacation Carry On Packing List with Kids
Yes, kids can travel carry-on only too. Our rule is that every child old enough to walk carries their own small backpack with their own fun things. It keeps them busy and frees up space in the grown-up bags.
- Kids’ clothes are tiny, so a kid can often share a packing cube with a sibling
- One change of clothes in your personal item for little ones (spills always happen on planes)
- Headphones sized for kids and a downloaded movie or two
- Snacks, more snacks and an empty water bottle
- A small activity kit with stickers, a coloring book and a card game
- Wipes, wipes and more wipes
Pack one new small toy or book per child and hand it out halfway through the flight. It buys you at least an hour of calm.
Hand Luggage Packing List by Trip Length
The beauty of a carry-on list is that it hardly changes with trip length. After about 5 days you simply plan one laundry stop instead of packing more.
Weekend or 3 Day Trip
Two tops, one bottom, one sleep set and your travel outfit. For a short getaway, a weekender bag on its own is often enough. See our full weekend packing list for details.
5 to 7 Day Trip
Follow the checklist above exactly. 4 to 5 tops, 2 bottoms, 1 dress or nice shirt and 3 pairs of shoes.
10 Days to 2 Weeks
Pack the same amount as for one week and plan to do laundry once. A small bottle of travel detergent or a few laundry sheets weigh almost nothing. Wear your outfits in a different order the second week and nobody will notice.
Packing List for Travel Carry On by Season
Summer and Beach Trips
Summer is the easiest season for carry-on travel. Clothes are small and light. Add a second swimsuit, a cover-up and a foldable tote, and buy sunscreen at your destination if you need a big bottle. For hot destinations, our beach vacation packing list has more ideas.
Winter and Cold Weather Trips
Winter clothes are bulky, so wear your heaviest layers on the plane: boots, sweater and coat. A packable down jacket squashes down to the size of a water bottle. Merino base layers keep you warm without taking up space. Gloves and a beanie fit in your coat pockets.
What Not to Pack in Your Carry-On
Leaving things out is just as important as what you put in. These are the items we stopped packing:
- Full-size toiletries. They will be taken at security, and most hotels have shampoo and soap anyway.
- “Just in case” outfits. If you are not sure you will wear it, you will not.
- More than three pairs of shoes.
- Heavy books. An e-reader holds hundreds.
- A hair dryer or big styling tools.
- Sharp objects like scissors with blades longer than 4 inches, pocket knives or tools.
- Liquids over 3.4 oz, including drinks, large sunscreen bottles and snow globes.
Our Best Carry On Packing Tips
- Roll, then cube. Roll soft items like tees and leggings, fold structured items like shirts, then put everything into packing cubes.
- Wear your bulkiest items. Sneakers, jeans and your jacket go on your body, not in the bag.
- Weigh your bag at home. Some airlines have weight limits on carry-ons too, so a luggage scale saves surprises.
- Keep liquids on top. Your clear bag should come out in one move at security.
- Use a wrinkle-release spray instead of packing an iron or steamer.
- Board early if you can. Overhead bin space fills fast, and gate checking defeats the whole point.
- Lay it all out first. Put everything on the bed, then remove a third of it. It works every time.

As you might know, I love traveling, but I don’t like carrying a lot of luggage. Most of it is unnecessary because you don’t use it anyway. Using the same travel bags and packing cubes helps us stay consistent with how much we pack.

Carry On Packing List FAQ
What should I pack in a carry-on for a week?
For one week, pack 4 to 5 tops, 2 bottoms, 1 dress or nice shirt, 1 warm layer, 1 rain jacket, underwear and socks for 5 to 7 days, sleepwear, 3 pairs of shoes (one worn on the plane), TSA-sized toiletries, chargers and your travel documents. Packing cubes make it all fit.
What liquids can I bring in a carry-on?
In the US, each liquid, gel or cream must be in a container of 3.4 oz (100 ml) or less, and all of them must fit in one clear quart-size bag. Solid toiletries like shampoo bars and stick deodorant do not count as liquids.
Can I bring a power bank in my carry-on?
Yes, and you have to. Power banks and spare lithium batteries are not allowed in checked luggage, so they must travel in your carry-on or personal item.
Is it really possible to travel carry-on only with kids?
Yes. Kids’ clothes are small, and with one backpack per child for their own snacks and toys, a family of four can travel with four carry-ons and four personal items. Plan one laundry stop on longer trips.
